In these difficult days when everybody is trying to save some money, designing and printing your own greeting cards instead of buying them is a welcome idea. They won't come out as professionally as the flashy expensive ones sold in stationery shops, but the fact that you customized heartfelt messages and printed them out yourself should give you some extra 'points' with the recipients.

There have been a couple of Jewish greeting card CD-ROMs in the past, most notably Rolnik Publishers' Mazal and Bracha, which was released in 1998, but these were very limited, with only a paltry number of themes and limited graphic ability. Since Rolnik actually produces printed greeting cards and postcards, it used in its disk some of these designs, some of which are quite kitschy.

This new, low-priced TES disk is much more generous and versatile. TES produces a wide variety of computer software collections of clip art, and many of these designs have been integrated into the greeting-card program. You can either start from scratch with an empty page or select a prepared card and personalize it.

Among the subjects of the made-to-order cards are love, health, holidays, birthdays, family, work, 'You did it!,' weddings, vacation, army, work, parties, studies, invitations, 'Miss you,' baby, and 'Keep in touch.'

Whether you choose a ready-made card or begin with a blank page, you have many tools and images at your disposal. There are 'stamps' with images of animals, hearts, objects, faces and symbols. Using the very user-friendly format, you click on icons whose functions are described in written text that appears in a window as soon as your cursor alights on them.

Choose among a collection of prepared illustrations relating to food, health, balloons, flags, teddy bears, Jewish holidays, headlines, music and legends, and plunk them down as you like. Then add text in any font or language that you have stored in your computer's word-processing program. Draw straight or freestyle lines in a number of widths and set down geometric shapes such as polygons, circles or squares on the screen. You can create them in any size by dragging a corner and pulling with your mouse. And if you're not satisfied with the two dozen basic fill-in or background colors, you can choose any of hundreds of different hues from a palette and mix them to create your own.

With so many options, your biggest problem is to ensure that the resulting design is not too overcrowded with images and letters. Don't go overboard. Children will enjoy this as much or even more than adults.

When you're all done, print out the card, fold it and place it in an envelope. It's unfortunate that the disk doesn't also include animations on a Jewish or general theme for sending as greetings via e-mail. For this
purpose, however, there are free Web sites, but many of the best ones that used to be free are open now only to paying subscribers.
